Swami Chaitanyananda Saraswati, a self-proclaimed godman, was recently arrested for sexually harassing 17 women at his ashram in Delhi. After evading arrest for 50 days, he was finally apprehended in Agra. A police investigation into his activities has revealed a series of fraudulent acts involving forged documents and false claims of political influence.
### Fake Visiting Cards and Passports
During the investigation, authorities discovered that Chaitanyananda possessed two forged visiting cards. One identified him as a Permanent Ambassador to the United Nations, while the other labeled him as an Indian Special Envoy of BRICS. Additionally, police found two passports issued under different names, with conflicting parental details and places of birth.
Further scrutiny revealed that he maintained two separate bank accounts at the Union Bank of India, each under a different name—adding to the growing list of deceptions.
### Property Fraud Involving ₹40 Crore
In 1998, the Delhi Lieutenant Governor allotted a plot in Vasant Kunj to Sharada Peeth for constructing a math (religious institution), with Chaitanyananda appointed as its senior official. However, in 2008, without authorization, he changed its name to Sri Sharada Institute of Indian Management and unlawfully rented out portions of the property.
These unauthorized actions culminated in a massive property fraud estimated at ₹40 crore.
### Evasion and Arrest Details
Chaitanyananda managed to avoid arrest for nearly two months before authorities finally detained him early morning at Hotel First in Taj Ganj. This was not his first brush with the law; he had previously evaded molestation charges in 2009 and 2016 by leveraging his influence.
Victims and witnesses have reported that some hostel wardens at the management institute would introduce students to the “Baba,” who then summoned them to his room under dubious pretenses. He allegedly lured victims with offers of free foreign trips and secretly installed cameras in hostel rooms to exploit them.
### Academic Fraud: Bogus Degrees and Publications
In efforts to bolster his reputation, Chaitanyananda claimed to be a highly qualified management expert, boasting an MBA and PhD from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business. He also asserted holding post-doctoral degrees and honorary DLitt titles from several universities.
His self-published books featured forewords attributed to Steve Jobs and letters of appreciation from former UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon. However, Delhi Police have publicly stated suspicions that these academic credentials and endorsements are entirely fabricated.
