**The story**
Former Delhi captain Mithun Manhas has been elected as the new president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). The announcement was made earlier today by Union Minister Jitendra Singh on his X account.

Manhas, who has represented three Indian Premier League (IPL) franchises during his career, is the first player from Jammu and Kashmir to hold this prestigious position.

**Career highlights**
Mithun Manhas enjoyed a stellar domestic career spanning from the 1997-98 season to 2016-17. He played 157 First-Class and 130 List A matches, accumulating an impressive 9,714 runs in First-Class cricket, including 27 centuries.

Despite his outstanding performances domestically, Manhas never got the opportunity to represent India at the international level. Towards the end of his playing days, he also served as a coach with the IPL franchise Gujarat Titans during the 2022 season.

**Administrative role and move to Jammu and Kashmir**
After Gautam Gambhir was reinstated as Delhi state captain for the 2016-17 season, Manhas moved to Jammu and Kashmir. He played there for a season with modest returns before transitioning into an administrative role aimed at reforming the state cricket body.

This experience played a key role in shaping his credentials for one of Indian cricket’s most coveted positions—the BCCI presidency.

**Election details**
Manhas was elected unopposed during the Annual General Meeting (AGM) held at the BCCI headquarters in Mumbai. He succeeds Roger Binny, who stepped down after reaching the age of 70 earlier this year.

He filed his nomination for the top post on September 21, following the Supreme Court-appointed Lodha committee’s recommendations that require a former player to head the board.

**Coaching stints in IPL**
Towards the end of his playing career, Manhas returned to Jammu and Kashmir and eventually shifted focus to cricket administration. He was also part of a BCCI sub-committee tasked with managing cricket affairs at the Jammu and Kashmir Cricket Association (JKCA).

In addition to administrative duties, Manhas has worked as a coach for several IPL teams, including Kings XI Punjab, Royal Challengers Bangalore, and Gujarat Titans.

**Twitter Post**
Union Minister Jitendra Singh shared the announcement on his X account earlier today, confirming Mithun Manhas as the new BCCI president.

Mithun Manhas’s journey from a domestic stalwart to the helm of Indian cricket administration is a historic milestone, and his leadership is widely anticipated to bring positive change to the game in India.
