Congress MP Shashi Tharoor has expressed his deep grief over the recent tragic stampede at a rally in Karur, Tamil Nadu. The incident, which occurred during an event addressed by actor-turned-politician Vijay, resulted in the death of 40 people and left many others injured.
Speaking about the tragedy, Tharoor described it as “heartbreaking” and highlighted how such incidents reveal systemic flaws in crowd management across India.
“It’s a very tragic and painful situation. Something is wrong in our country with crowd management. Every year, there seems to be an incident,” Tharoor said while addressing reporters in Thiruvananthapuram.
He recalled similar deadly stampedes, such as the one in Bengaluru, emphasizing the urgent need for a national policy on crowd safety. “There should be certain rules, standards, and protocols in place,” he added.
Tharoor further urged both central and state governments to agree on and implement “very strict procedures” for crowd control. According to him, without clear national standards, tragedies like the Karur stampede will continue to claim innocent lives.
### Government Response and Compensation Announcements
In the wake of the incident, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced compensation packages for the victims’ families. Each family of the deceased will receive ₹2 lakh from the PM National Relief Fund (PMNRF), while those injured will be given ₹50,000 each.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin also announced an ex-gratia payment of ₹10 lakh for the families of the deceased and ₹1 lakh for the injured.
Additionally, Vijay himself has pledged ₹20 lakh compensation for the families of those who lost their lives and ₹2 lakh for those injured in the stampede.
The Karur tragedy has once again brought the critical issue of crowd safety and management to the forefront, underscoring the urgent need for a comprehensive national framework to prevent such disasters in the future.
