West Indies fast bowler Jayden Seales has opened up about his ambitions in Test cricket. The 24-year-old, who made his international debut at the age of 19, expressed his desire to “build my name” and “a legacy” in the longest format of the game. He aims to be the number one player in Test cricket.
Overcoming Challenges
Seales spoke candidly about the toughest phase of his career during an interview with The Cricket Monthly from ESPNcricinfo. The highlight was undergoing knee surgery in 2022, which sidelined him for six months. Reflecting on the period, he recalled feeling “upset” and “confused” after receiving the news. His recovery involved seven weeks on crutches followed by four-and-a-half months of therapy.
“I felt like I would’ve gotten a lot better faster and probably done better back then,” Seales admitted, highlighting the mental and physical hurdles he faced during his rehabilitation.
Cricketing Lineage and Early Career
Seales made his Test debut against South Africa in June 2021. Initially anxious about the big occasion, he found reassurance from West Indies captain Kraigg Brathwaite, who chose not to give him the new ball. This helped calm his nerves and allowed him to settle into the match.
Notably, cricket runs in Seales’s family. His grandfather, uncles, and father have all played the sport at various levels, providing him with a strong foundation and inspiration from an early age.
Aspiring to Be the Best
With 88 Test wickets at an impressive average of 22.33, Seales is determined to establish himself as one of the finest West Indies bowlers of his generation. “I would keep working on, keep getting better in my game to end up one day as No. 1 in the world and to be in that conversation with the West Indies legends and to leave a good legacy for myself when I’m finished,” he stated confidently.
Bowling Technique and Inspirations
Seales’s bowling action is distinguished by an 84-foot run-up coupled with a rhythm-based approach. Rather than relying on generating significant air speed, he produces pace off the pitch, which can sometimes lead to awkward bounce that troubles batsmen.
His style and determination were heavily influenced by his father, who introduced him to classic footage of West Indies greats such as Sir Curtly Ambrose and Courtney Walsh. These legends continue to serve as motivation for Seales in his own journey.
Career Milestones
Seales first made headlines with a five-wicket haul against Pakistan in Jamaica. While he took three wickets in the first innings, he also experienced an expensive spell, with an economy rate of 4.37. Currently ranked 12th in the ICC Test bowling rankings, Seales holds multi-year contracts with Cricket West Indies, reaffirming his commitment to Test cricket despite the growing appeal of T20 leagues.
