John Clarke, Michel H. Devoret, and John M. Martinis have been awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics for their pioneering research on quantum tunnelling—an area of study that, while seemingly obscure, is driving significant advances in digital technology.
Clarke, 83, conducted his groundbreaking research at the University of California, Berkeley. Martinis carried out his work at the University of California, Santa Barbara, while Devoret conducted research at both Yale University and the University of California, Santa Barbara.
Speaking from his cellphone, Clarke highlighted the practical impact of their work, stating, “One of the reasons that cellphones work is because of this research.”
The Nobel committee noted that their contributions from the 1980s have paved the way for developing the next generation of quantum technologies. These include quantum cryptography, quantum computers, and quantum sensors, all of which hold promise for revolutionizing computing and communications.
