**What’s the story?**

Former England captain Steven Gerrard has declined the opportunity to return as head coach of Scottish football club Rangers. According to Sky Sports News, this decision came after constructive talks between both parties on Thursday and Friday. Despite positive discussions, Gerrard felt the timing wasn’t right for a comeback and chose to withdraw from the recruitment process.

**New contenders**

Who are the other candidates for the job? Former Sheffield Wednesday boss Danny Röhl has impressed Rangers chiefs during the recruitment process and remains a strong contender. Röhl, who left Sheffield Wednesday in July, was approached by Rangers prior to their appointment of Russell Martin.

Martin was sacked after just 123 days in charge. His departure followed a 1-1 draw at Falkirk, leaving Rangers eighth in the Scottish Premiership.

**Gerrard’s managerial journey so far**

Gerrard previously led Rangers to a Scottish Premiership title in 2021 before leaving for Aston Villa. However, his time at Villa was short-lived, as he was dismissed after less than a year in charge. He later took up a managerial role at Saudi Pro League club Al Ettifaq but departed after 18 months.

Despite recent talks with Rangers, both parties have left the door open for future possibilities.

**Departure from Al Ettifaq**

In January 2025, Gerrard and Al Ettifaq mutually agreed to part ways after an 18-month stint at the Saudi Arabian club. Gerrard had joined Al Ettifaq in July 2023 and signed a two-year contract extension in January 2024, which was intended to keep him at the club until 2027.

During his tenure, Gerrard managed Al Ettifaq in 59 matches across all competitions, achieving 23 wins, 16 draws, and 20 defeats. His win percentage stood at 39%.

Steven Gerrard’s decision marks another twist in Rangers’ search for a new head coach as they aim to improve their standing in the Scottish Premiership this season.
