**Tripura: 14-month-old Girl Raped and Murdered by Maternal Grandfather; Accused Arrested**

In a shocking and tragic incident in the Panisagar subdivision of North Tripura district, a 14-month-old infant was allegedly raped and murdered by her mother’s maternal uncle on October 11.
According to reports from Hubnews, the accused, a 44-year-old daily wager, was arrested from Nilam Bazar in Assam on Sunday and subsequently brought back to Tripura for further investigation.
### Incident Details
The horrific crime occurred while the child was visiting her maternal uncle’s house accompanied by her mother. When the infant went missing for several hours, the family raised the alarm around 8:00 PM.
Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) of Panisagar, Rahul Balhara, stated that a search operation was immediately launched with the help of local residents. During the search, police discovered a patch of freshly dug earth near the accused’s residence. Upon digging, the lifeless body of the child was found.
### Arrest and Investigation
Following the crime, the accused fled the scene. The child’s grandfather filed a formal complaint on the morning of October 12. A manhunt ensued, leading to the arrest of the accused at around 2:00 PM from Nilam Bazar in Assam’s Sribhumi district.
A special police team brought the suspect back to Tripura to face legal proceedings. SDPO Balhara confirmed that a thorough investigation is underway. The accused is currently facing charges of rape and murder, pending final confirmation from an official post-mortem report.
### Public Outcry
The brutal nature of the crime has ignited widespread condemnation. Brinda Adige, a noted humanist and activist, described the incident as “absolutely horrendous” and expressed deep shock that such a betrayal could occur at the hands of someone trusted by the mother.
The child’s body has been sent to Panisagar Sub-divisional Hospital for a post-mortem examination to ascertain the exact cause of death and confirm sexual assault.
The accused is expected to be produced before a local court on Monday as investigations continue.
