Three Academy of the Canyons seniors are being recognized for their community spirit after organizing a food drive to benefit the Santa Clarita Grocery Food Bank.
Students Nathan Patrus, Naythen Valdiviezo, and Alex Agopian created and distributed flyers throughout their neighborhood, each accompanied by a paper bag for residents to fill with nonperishable food items.
“Nathan and his two brothers began volunteering during COVID-19 and quickly realized we needed better refrigeration equipment,” said Bradley Grose, director of SC Grocery. “After leading a community GoFundMe, securing over $6,000, this action of kindness launched SCGFB to have its first 3-door commercial refrigerators. Nathan never stopped there, inspiring volunteer students from his high school, and then on to establishing community food drives for SCGFB.”
The flyers included detailed instructions and pickup dates, letting neighbors know when donations would be collected. When Nathan and Naythen returned on the scheduled days, they found the response was far greater than expected.
“Young leaders don’t wait for change; they create it, and he exemplifies that!” Grose said. “We’re going to greatly miss Nathan as he heads off to college. However, his legacy has set the bar for excellence, a true inspiration for student volunteers.”
Thanks to the generosity of their community, the students collected canned goods, dried foods, baby formula, diapers, and more, helping to restock the shelves of a key local resource while bringing neighbors together for a good cause.
Their efforts serve as a reminder that small acts of leadership and kindness can make a big difference in Santa Clarita.
