We’re seven games into the 2025 NFL season, and there’s still a lot of uncertainty surrounding the Jacksonville Jaguars. While they’ve shown flashes of impressive performance, they’ve also delivered some head-scratching football during this stretch. One of the biggest reasons for the confusion around the Jaguars has been their shaky offensive production.
A key factor contributing to Jacksonville’s inconsistency on offense is the regression of wide receiver Brian Thomas Jr. Following an excellent finish to the 2024 season, many expected the second-year wideout to take a significant leap forward this year. However, Thomas has struggled at times this season and has also dealt with injuries.
One of the areas where Thomas has noticeably struggled is in catching the ball—he currently sports one of the worst drop rates in the league. According to Pro Football Reference, he leads the NFL with nine drops and holds the second-highest drop rate at 16.4%. His difficulties catching passes in the middle of the field have been a major hindrance to the Jaguars’ offensive rhythm.
Despite these setbacks, Thomas Jr. is still early in his career, and there remains ample room for growth and improvement. The Jaguars have shown faith in his potential, but that hasn’t stopped them from exploring trade options as the trade deadline approaches.
According to Dianna Russini’s report for The Athletic, “The Jaguars are listening on calls for WR Brian Thomas Jr., even if a move feels highly unlikely.”
Brian Thomas Jr. was a first-round pick by the Jaguars in 2024 and emerged as one of the team’s biggest standouts last season. He amassed 1,282 receiving yards and scored ten touchdowns in his rookie campaign, firmly establishing himself as a contender for Offensive Rookie of the Year. The hype around him positioned Thomas Jr. as one of the best young wide receivers in the league, and a breakout 2025 season seemed nearly assured.
Unfortunately for Jacksonville, Thomas Jr. has yet to live up to that potential in 2025. His struggles in the passing game have undoubtedly impacted the Jaguars’ offensive production, and how he rebounds for the remainder of the season could be pivotal for the team’s outlook moving forward.
