Hearts sank on the side of the New York Giants Sunday, as rookie running back Cam Skattebo went down hard. The promising star suffered a disheartening leg injury that left his Giants teammates in disbelief.
Skattebo fell awkwardly following a tackle, and the severity of the injury quickly became apparent. Jaxson Dart screamed in agony watching the scene unfold. The rookie sustained a dislocated ankle, adding to the growing NFL injury list for New York.
After the Philadelphia Eagles loss, head coach Brian Daboll immediately addressed the health of his prized running back in the postgame press conference. “I feel absolutely terrible for the young man,” Daboll confessed, his voice and facial expression conveying the gravity of the situation.
Skattebo was taken straight to the hospital after the injury, which occurred in the second quarter when an Eagles defender fell right on top of his right leg. Before going down, Skattebo had been a force to reckon with—leading the Giants with 398 rushing yards and five touchdowns on the season, plus an additional 198 yards receiving.
Giants fans had embraced Skattebo’s blue-collar, physical running style—a north-south approach reminiscent of backfield greats like Brandon Jacobs, Rodney Hampton, and Otis Anderson, all Super Bowl winners. His presence on the field was a key component of New York’s offense.
The injury happened during a drive when Philadelphia forced a punt. Without Skattebo, the Giants managed to add two field goals and a late touchdown but struggled overall on offense. The team mustered just 35 rushing yards in his absence, with Tyrone Tracy Jr. leading the way with 39 yards on 10 carries. Meanwhile, Dart finished with 17 yards, and Skattebo had gained only 12 yards before his ankle ailment ended his day.
New York tallied just 246 total offensive yards on the afternoon and dropped to 2-6 overall. Now, with Skattebo’s injury, the Giants likely face the harsh reality that their rookie running back’s 2025 season—and possibly more—may be in jeopardy as they await further updates on his recovery.
