Toronto Blue Jays manager John Schneider had a lengthy conversation with home plate umpire Jordan Baker after the first inning of Game 7 of the World Series on Saturday. Schneider appeared upset that Los Angeles Dodgers starter Shohei Ohtani was given extra time to warm up after his at-bat in the top of the first inning.

Ohtani was both pitching and hitting in the decisive final game of the season, aiming to deliver a heroic performance for the Dodgers as they sought to repeat as champions. According to FOX broadcaster John Smoltz, Ohtani received around three minutes to warm up, compared to the roughly 90 seconds allotted to regular starting pitchers who do not bat.

The discussion between Schneider and Baker was calm and ultimately remained respectful.

In a historic moment, Ohtani ended a 50-year drought by becoming the first pitcher since 1975 to record a hit and also start in a Game 7 of the World Series. Although the hit didn’t produce any runs, the Blue Jays managed to escape the first inning unscathed.

Ohtani continued to impress in the bottom of the first inning, striking out two batters. Notably, he struck out Vladimir Guerrero Jr., which led catcher Will Smith to throw out George Springer attempting to steal second base. Springer appeared confused as he returned to the dugout, but the inning concluded without further incident.
