The EU’s Innovation Fund is set to invest €2.9 billion in 61 projects in its newest funding round aimed at accelerating net-zero technology deployment.

These projects will focus on a diverse range of sectors, including energy-intensive industries, renewable energy and energy storage, net-zero mobility and buildings, cleantech manufacturing, and industrial carbon management.

All selected projects align with the Clean Industrial Deal, the EU’s strategic blueprint for transforming its decarbonisation efforts into a powerful driver of economic growth. The deal was presented in February and emphasizes the importance of a smoother pipeline to transition green technology innovations into large-scale deployment.

A key objective under the Clean Industrial Deal is to integrate projects originally funded by the €93.5 billion Horizon Europe research programme, thereby bridging the gap between research and market-ready solutions.

However, it is important to note that Horizon Europe and the Innovation Fund operate differently. While Horizon Europe supports groundbreaking technology development, the Innovation Fund focuses on scaling and deploying proven technologies. This complementary relationship aims to accelerate Europe’s journey toward a net-zero future.
