Civilization has received a significant update this week, bringing exciting changes to the game’s sea gameplay and offering players a free expansion pack for a limited time.
The general update, Civilization 7 Update 1.3, introduces a massive overhaul to water gameplay. It revamps the way water tiles function, including resource gathering, spawning, and navigation. Coastal tiles have been heavily redesigned to provide more rewarding outputs, enhancing the strategic value of sea regions.
One of the key highlights is the improved navigation and combat mechanics involving the Privateer unit. Accessible to all civilizations, the Privateer can attack, defend, and plunder trade routes early in the game, adding new layers of tactical depth to maritime play.
These changes set the stage perfectly for the newly launched Tides of Power Collection. This expansion pack introduces the infamous pirate Edward Teach, better known as Blackbeard, into the game. Players can also start as the Republic of Pirates, taking a fresh approach to naval domination.
In addition to Blackbeard and the Republic of Pirates, the expansion brings Sayyida al Hurra and the Ottomans as new playable civilizations. They join existing civilizations like Iceland and Tonga, while four new Wonders have also been added to enrich the gameplay experience.
The Tides of Power Collection is available to claim for free until January 5, 2026. After this date, the expansion will be priced at $30. However, anyone who already owns Civilization 7 can claim the pack at no additional cost on their preferred platform until the deadline. Firaxis Games offers this as a token of appreciation for the fans who have supported Civilization 7 so far.
