Peak has proven to be a surprisingly big winner for indie studios Aggro Crab and Landfall. With more and more groups of friends jumping in and trying to survive the harrowing climbs ahead, the developers have released the game’s latest free update.
The Roots update introduces a brand-new biome inspired by the lush forests of the Pacific Northwest, bringing with it some unique and unexpected elements. While players are still climbing in Peak, the environment now shifts to towering trees within a dense forest.
Climbing these massive trees presents a new challenge, regardless of your party size. The difficulty ramps up as giant insects make their presence known. Beware of enormous spiders that can trap players in webs and drop them, potentially leading to a long and perilous fall.
Exploration in The Roots also includes foraging native mushrooms, but be cautious—consuming these fungi comes with risks. Some mushrooms may cause strange effects, including an unsettling touch of “zombie-ism.”
In addition to the new biome, Peak’s latest update brings improvements to the cooking system. Players can now observe effects on non-food items when placing them in a fire. However, the developers are keeping the specifics under wraps, encouraging players to experiment and discover the outcomes for themselves.
Moreover, it is now possible to cook the poison out of berries, making them safer to eat. Unfortunately, this detox process does not apply to mushrooms, so handle those forest fungi with care.
