**Ammonia Leak Prompts Evacuations After Explosion at Mississippi Chemical Plant**
YAZOO CITY, Miss. — An explosion at a hydrogen and nitrogen product manufacturer in Mississippi on Wednesday caused an ammonia leak, forcing nearby residents to evacuate, officials reported.
Mississippi Governor Tate Reeves announced via X that emergency responders from across the state are actively managing the anhydrous ammonia leak at CF Industries’ plant located north of Yazoo City. Fortunately, no deaths or injuries have been reported.
“Thank you to all of Mississippi’s first responders and emergency managers for quickly responding to the leak,” Gov. Reeves said.
CF Industries has not yet responded to requests for comment from The Associated Press.
The Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality stated on X that air monitoring operations are currently underway and will continue as long as necessary to ensure public safety.
Anhydrous ammonia, commonly used as a fertilizer to supply nitrogen for crops like corn and wheat, can cause burns if a person comes into contact with it in either gas or liquid form, according to the Minnesota Department of Agriculture.
Yazoo City is a small community located approximately 49 miles (79 kilometers) north of Jackson. Local authorities continue to monitor the situation closely and advise residents to follow all safety instructions.
