India secured a 2-1 victory in the five-match T20 series against Australia after the final match at Brisbane’s Gabba was abandoned due to rain after just 4.5 overs.

After losing the toss and being sent in to bat on Saturday, India’s openers Abhishek Sharma (23*) and Shubman Gill (29*) took the score to a promising 52 without loss before a thunderstorm swept across the ground, forcing players off the field. Gill took the early initiative, striking six fours in his unbeaten 29, while Abhishek was dropped twice—by Glenn Maxwell and Ben Dwarshuis—on his way to an unbeaten 23.

The sellout crowd at the Gabba remained hopeful for a resumption, but the stormy weather persisted, and after about two and a half hours, the match was abandoned.

The series had its share of interruptions, with the opening match in Canberra also washed out. Australia claimed a four-wicket win in the second game at Melbourne, powered by paceman Josh Hazlewood’s bowling. However, Australia then withdrew Hazlewood and several other players named in the Ashes squad to prepare for the upcoming Test series against England.

India bounced back strongly to win the third T20 by five wickets in Hobart and dominated the fourth on the Gold Coast by 48 runs.

Abhishek Sharma was named Player of the Series for his impressive tally of 163 runs at an average of 40.75.

India captain Suryakumar Yadav praised his team’s effort, saying, “The way everybody chipped in in every game and we came back from being one match down, I think credit goes to all the boys; a complete team effort.”

Currently topping the ICC rankings in the shortest format, India will head home with confidence and a variety of player options as they look forward to defending their T20 World Cup title on home soil early next year.

Australia captain Mitch Marsh acknowledged the competition, stating, “I thought all in all it was a good series, two teams really going at it. India won the games when it mattered, so congratulations to them.”
