California Highway Patrol (CHP) officers engaged in a high-speed chase Friday afternoon after identifying a gold Lexus as suspicious in connection with a reported theft. The pursuit involved a woman and a man driving through several East Bay cities before the woman was arrested and the man escaped on foot, officials said.
Just after 4 p.m. Friday in Oakland, the CHP spotted the Lexus and linked it to a theft report, prompting officers to initiate a chase. The vehicle, occupied by the man and woman, traveled across multiple interstate highways, including I-880, I-238, and I-680.
Video footage of the chase shared by KTVU showed the driver swerving into oncoming traffic in an apparent attempt to evade police. The pursuit spanned a wide area, with the vehicle passing through neighborhoods near Oakland, Hayward, Dublin, Pleasanton, San Leandro, San Lorenzo, and San Ramon.
During the chase, a Contra Costa Sheriff’s helicopter took over aerial support from a CHP helicopter that had to refuel mid-pursuit. The suspects eventually fled the vehicle in San Ramon, attempting to escape on foot.
Although officers arrested the woman, the man reportedly managed to evade capture near the 8000 block of Calvert Circle, according to the CHP. Throughout the pursuit, officers deployed several spike strips; however, the suspects successfully avoided them.
The CHP continues to search for the unidentified male suspect, and the investigation remains ongoing. Authorities have not released the names of the individuals involved.
