A 60-year-old man from Thane lost nearly Rs 17 lakh in a digital arrest fraud after receiving a phone call from someone claiming to be from the Data Protection Board of India on August 20.
The caller informed him that, based on his documents, a SIM card had been procured in Nashik, which was allegedly used to send obscene messages and videos. Following this, the Nashik police registered a case.
The complainant later received a video call from a “fake” policeman. The scammers went further by sending bogus copies of an FIR, an Enforcement Directorate arrest warrant, and even an ATM card bearing his name.
Over the course of a month, the victim was manipulated into transferring Rs 17 lakh to the scammers.
This case serves as a reminder to stay vigilant against such fraudulent schemes targeting individuals digitally.
