Real Madrid are reportedly open to a swap deal involving Liverpool’s summer signing Florian Wirtz and one of their own players.
Wirtz, who became the most expensive midfielder in British transfer history after joining Liverpool from Bayer Leverkusen in June, has yet to live up to expectations at Anfield. The German midfielder is still searching for his first goal for the Reds and has contributed only three assists in 16 appearances across all competitions.
According to Defensa Central, Real Madrid manager Xabi Alonso is keen to reunite with Wirtz despite the midfielder’s underwhelming form at Liverpool. The report suggests that since Liverpool have a long-standing interest in Rodrygo, Los Blancos are considering a swap deal involving these two players.
Rodrygo’s game time has notably diminished in recent months. The Brazilian winger has struggled for minutes since last season under former manager Carlo Ancelotti and has mostly featured as a substitute under Alonso in the current campaign. So far this season, Rodrygo has made 16 appearances for Real Madrid but has primarily played a bit-part role.
Real Madrid have reportedly had Wirtz on their radar for several months and are believed to have been interested in signing him if a suitable offer had been made. Wirtz played under Alonso’s guidance at Bayer Leverkusen, where the pair were part of a historic double-winning team in the 2023-24 season. Defensa Central added that Madrid see Wirtz as a key midfield addition.
However, a potential move seems unlikely at present, as Liverpool do not intend to sell the young German anytime soon.
### Rodrygo Previously Rejected Liverpool Move
Before the latest swap deal talks, Liverpool showed interest in signing Rodrygo during the summer, but no deal materialized, reportedly because they could not meet Real Madrid’s asking price.
Interestingly, back in 2017, Rodrygo had turned down a chance to join Liverpool under then-manager Jürgen Klopp. In 2024, after joining Madrid, Rodrygo openly revealed he rejected the transfer, explaining that he simply wasn’t interested.
“We didn’t close the deal because I didn’t want to. I wanted to stay at Santos even though the offer was very good. The pathway they promised me would also have been very good for my career. I was going to finish my studies in England to prepare for European football. It had always been my dream to play in Europe,” Rodrygo said.
“Everything was very good, but my desire spoke louder. I wanted to stay at Santos and make a bit of history at the club. And that’s what happened: I was able to fulfil my dream of playing for Santos. But it’s true, I almost went to Liverpool.”
Rodrygo joined Real Madrid from his childhood club Santos in 2019. Since then, he has made over 250 appearances for the Los Blancos during a trophy-laden six-year stint.
