In a viral social media video, a dog owner shared heartwarming footage of their Jack Russell before and after getting a new sibling, and internet users can’t get enough of it.
The clip, posted on TikTok in October under the username @toribrereton, begins by showing Ralph, the Jack Russell, spending most of his time alone in bed, seemingly bored. The second half of the video reveals how much his life changed after welcoming a little sister, Lucy.
Now that Ralph has a best friend for life, he spends his days playing with Lucy, chasing each other around, and cuddling together in bed. It’s clear that Ralph will never be alone again. The caption reads, “Ralph before Lucy. Ralph with Lucy,” followed by, “and we always thought Ralph wouldn’t cope with another dog.”
While dogs are social animals and generally enjoy human company, they don’t always take well to living with other canines. According to Oakland Veterinary, dogs that have been properly socialized or raised with other pups often benefit from having another canine companion in the home. However, dogs used to being on their own may not always welcome the change.
So, how can you tell if your pup needs another companion? And how do you know if your dog will adjust well to sharing their home with another dog?
First, observe your dog’s behavior. If your pup becomes anxious or aggressive around other dogs, it could be a sign they prefer to be alone, enjoying their space and human family without competition. Conversely, if your dog appears sad after a playdate, it may mean they crave the companionship of another canine friend.
Gender also plays a role when choosing a best friend for your dog. Experts recommend pairing dogs of the opposite gender, with a size difference of no more than 50 percent, to improve compatibility.
The video quickly went viral on social media, garnering over 308,000 views and more than 37,200 likes on TikTok. Viewers expressed their joy in the comments section.
One user, Charlie Capers, said, “That fills my heart with absolute joy.” Another, Lady Ekaterina, wrote, “This is one of the most beautiful videos I have seen. Thank you for sharing.” KAYLEIGH added, “Ohhh God, why am I bawling my eyes out at how happy Ralph is?”
This touching video reminds us of the incredible bond between canine siblings and the joy that companionship brings.
