The Minnesota Vikings currently hold a 4-5 record and are quickly approaching a critical point in their season where losses can no longer be afforded. Amid the team’s recent struggles, star receiver Justin Jefferson has taken it upon himself to help turn things around. Ahead of the must-win matchup against the Chicago Bears, Jefferson issued a two-word warning that embodies his mindset moving forward.
Through nine games, Jefferson has accumulated 686 yards and two touchdowns, averaging just 76.2 yards per game. This marks a career low for the usually dominant receiver. His total yardage ranks eighth in the league, which is lower than his usual placement. Historically, Jefferson has been among the top five in both total yardage and touchdowns.
Several factors may be contributing to Jefferson’s slower start this season. The Vikings have faced quarterback instability, with J.J. McCarthy suffering an injury in Week 2 and Carson Wentz also dealing with setbacks. Although McCarthy has returned, the Vikings recently fell to the Baltimore Ravens, with Jefferson managing only 37 yards in that loss.
Despite the challenges, Jefferson is determined to elevate his game. He told The Minnesota Star Tribune that he needs to return to “savage mode,” a mindset reminiscent of his standout “Year 3 Jets” performance.
“Mentally, just wanting to get back into that mode,” Jefferson said during a Thursday news conference. “I like to say savage mode. Just going out there and just killing it and not worrying about the plays, not worrying about anything else I can’t control. Doing everything I can control and making the most of my opportunities.”
If Jefferson can recapture that “savage” form, it could significantly bolster the Vikings’ offense. Typically, opposing defenses focus extra attention on Jefferson, which in turn opens the door for other playmakers to make big gains and score. Even when Jefferson is heavily covered, he has a knack for making game-changing plays.
The 2025 season has started off slowly for this star pass catcher, and with the Vikings facing a surging Bears team, Jefferson’s return to top form will be crucial. To help the offense keep pace with quarterback Caleb Williams and company, Jefferson’s “savage mode” may be just what the Vikings need to get back on track.
