‘They love to use cats as an insult’: Male boss belittles 28-year-old female employee for loving cats and not wanting children, she claps back and considers reporting him to HR

For decades, the term “crazy cat lady” has been tossed around as an insult. Sadly, this outdated stereotype persists, reflecting how little progress we’ve made in challenging the unfair and untrue judgments aimed at cat lovers.

Recently, a female stewardess found herself in an uncomfortable situation during a flight with her male superior. When he initiated small talk about children, she explained that she didn’t want any. To her surprise, he declared this choice “unheard of” and insisted she would end up lonely in old age, with only her cats for company.

But as any cat lover knows, being surrounded by the affection of feline friends is far from an insult—it’s a joy. Thankfully, she managed to navigate the awkward conversation and is now seriously considering reporting his behavior to HR. We believe she absolutely should.

It’s important to note that if she were a dog lover, it’s unlikely he would have said something like that. So why is it assumed that cat lovers are destined to be sad, lonely, and living amid dozens of cats? Cats make wonderful companions. While it’s true that some people might accumulate cats—especially if they rescue strays—it certainly doesn’t mean everyone will end up with more litter boxes than living space.

We hope she reports him, and that he faces consequences for his insensitive comments. Perhaps as part of his learning process, he could discover just how much love a cat can give. Maybe then he’ll understand how wrong his assumptions were and gain a little compassion along the way.
