For decades, the term “crazy cat lady” has been tossed around as an insult. Sadly, this outdated stereotype about cat lovers persists, despite being both hurtful and untrue.
Recently, a female flight attendant found herself in an uncomfortable conversation with her male superior during a flight. When she mentioned that she didn’t want children, her boss reacted as if this was absolutely unheard of. He insisted that she would end up lonely, with only her cats for company in old age.
As if that’s an insult at all! Many of us would be happy to be surrounded by the love of cats as we grow older. Thankfully, she managed to get out of the situation, and now she is seriously considering reporting him to HR.
If you ask us, she definitely should.
We’re confident that if she had been a dog lover, her boss would never have made such a comment. Why is it assumed that all cat lovers will end up sad, lonely, and living in cluttered homes with dozens of cats?
Cats are wonderful companions. It’s true that if you rescue strays, you might end up with more cats than expected, but that doesn’t mean all cat lovers live in chaos with more litter boxes than floor space.
We hope she reports this incident. Perhaps as part of his punishment, her boss should spend some time learning just how much love a cat can offer. Maybe then he’ll realize how wrong he was — and learn a thing or two about compassion in the process.
