Dallas P. J. Washington Jr. and Cooper Flagg each scored 21 points and teamed up on a crucial basket late in overtime to help the Dallas Mavericks secure a 138-133 victory over the Portland Trail Blazers on Sunday night.
With Dallas leading 130-129 and 1:39 remaining, Flagg grabbed the rebound of a missed 3-pointer by Portland’s Shaedon Sharpe. He quickly delivered an outlet pass to Washington, who finished with a powerful jam during a 6-0 Mavericks run that sealed the win. Daniel Gafford contributed 20 points, including seven in overtime, and was one of seven Mavericks players who scored in double figures.
The Mavericks (4-10) snapped a three-game losing streak with the victory. Sharpe scored a season-high 36 points for the Trail Blazers (6-7), who have lost four of their last five games. Deni Avdija added 29 points before fouling out with 1:39 left—right before Gafford hit two free throws to put Dallas ahead for good at 130-129.
Portland’s Jerami Grant scored 26 points in his first start of the season, filling in for Jrue Holiday, who sat out due to right calf soreness.
In overtime, Dallas was perfect from the field, hitting all seven of their attempts—all two-pointers. The Trail Blazers, meanwhile, matched a season high by grabbing 22 offensive rebounds, including seven from Donovan Clingan, who finished with 11 total rebounds. Despite the rebounding advantage, resulting in a 32-10 lead in second-chance points, Portland was unable to close the gap.
The Mavericks’ Anthony Davis missed his ninth consecutive game with a left calf strain. Before tip-off, the team announced that the 32-year-old, 10-time All-Star would be sidelined for at least another seven to 10 days. Davis has struggled with multiple injuries since the controversial February 2 trade that sent Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers. He has now missed 31 of a possible 47 games with Dallas.
Notably, Davis was seen on the bench wearing the jersey of Green Bay Packers quarterback Jordan Love, who famously led his team to a 48-32 victory over the Dallas Cowboys in the 2023-24 NFL wild-card playoffs.
