Bollywood actor Sonu Sood was questioned by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Wednesday as part of an ongoing money laundering investigation linked to the online betting app 1xBet. The 52-year-old actor appeared at the ED office in central Delhi around noon after being summoned by the agency. He is being questioned under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).
### Ongoing Probe into 1xBet Betting App
The ED’s investigation targets the 1xBet online betting platform amid allegations that such apps have cheated individuals out of crores of rupees while evading direct and indirect taxes. The agency has already questioned several former cricketers, including Suresh Raina, Shikhar Dhawan, Robin Uthappa, and Yuvraj Singh, in connection with the case.
### Probe into Celebrity Endorsements
A significant focus of the investigation is on how celebrities were approached by 1xBet for endorsements. The ED is probing who the key contacts were in India and how the payment transactions were conducted. They are examining whether these endorsement payments constitute “proceeds of crime” under the PMLA.
The agency has also requested copies of all contracts, emails, and other documentation related to the celebrities’ dealings with 1xBet.
