Noah Cyrus eulogized her late friend, rapper XXXTentacion, with a collaboration on her new album. The pop and indie rock vocalist, who’s the younger sister of Miley Cyrus, discussed XXXTentacion on the Monday (November 17) episode of The Zach Sang Show. The artists previously worked together on the 2017 song “Again,” which was released one year before the Florida rapper was murdered in his hometown at 20 years old. Around the 7-minute mark of the video below, Cyrus explained that she ends her letters with an “XXX” as a “goodbye,” so it was only right that she conclude her recent album, I Want My Loved Ones to Go with Me, with “XXX. That wasn’t our ending [to the album] for the longest time,” Cyrus told Sang. “And we had, I guess, ‘Love is a Canyon.’ It was ‘XXX’ and then ‘Love is a Canyon.’ One day I texted Mike. I was like, ‘Are we dumb?. I sign every letter with ‘XXX.’ I’m like, “That’s literally like what we’re saying we end our every goodbye with ‘XXX.'” Elsewhere during the interview, Cyrus said that she’ll continue to perform “Again. I always want Jah a part of my set,” she said, referring to XXXTentacion’s birth name, Jahseh Onfroy. “No matter how the genre changes, we’ll find a way to like keep that in the set.” Cyrus added that the rapper was the “reason” she recorded “With You,” a song written (but never released) by her father, Billy Ray Cyrus. “Originally, back in 2018 when I was really struggling with what had happened to [XXXTentacion], this song my dad would always sing me, which was his first song he ever wrote,” Cyrus recalled. “Every time he sang it, ‘Just listen in the wind, know that I’m your friend and always with you,’ I just would always see Jah. And so that was my intent and purpose of putting it on on this album was to finally like put that out there and connect with him,” she concluded. While two albums were released during XXXTentacion’s lifetime, three posthumous albums have also been released, including the soundtrack to the 2022 documentary Look At Me.
