Three Mount Clemens city commissioners switched their vote on Monday and threw their support behind Commissioner Laura Fournier to remain on as mayor pro tem. Commissioners Spencer Calhoun, Theresa McGarity, and newly elected Roxanne Brown had backed Calhoun for the position, while commissioners Erik RIck and Jill Towner Yore had voted for Fournier at the Nov. 10 organizational meeting. With Mayor Laura Kropp and Fournier not in attendance at the Nov. 10 session, and city protocol requiring four votes to secure the mayor pro tem position, the matter was tabled until the Nov. 17 meeting. All three commissioners who previously voted for Calhoun decided to support Fournier on Monday, Nov. 17. Along with Rick, Yore and Kropp also voting for Fournier, she was elected on a 6-0 tally. “We have a winner,” City Clerk Cathleen Martin said. Calhoun said he decided to back Fournier on her merits. “She has earned every vote that she will receive and I think that’s a testament to her character and to the power of our democratic process,” Calhoun said. A mayor pro tem is a council or commission member elected by the city council to serve as a temporary replacement for the mayor. They preside over council meetings when the mayor is absent and can assume the mayor’s duties until the mayor returns or a new mayor is elected. Fournier, who retired as a CFO for Compuware and is CFO for Mad Dog Technology, was not in attendance at Monday’s meeting. She served as mayor pro tem before, but was re-elected to the commission in the Nov. 4 election. She was again the city’s top vote getter, taking in 26% of the vote. In some cities, such as Sterling Heights, the top vote-getter in a legislative body’s race is automatically named the mayor pro tem.
