After a ten-day lull, the Quinnipiac women’s ice hockey team returned to ECAC play against the Princeton Tigers, taking the game into overtime before falling 4-3. Initially, it seemed that Quinnipiac had completely shaken off its scoring struggles from before its 10-day break. For a team that has relied heavily on the scoring prowess of its top-line in its recent slate of games, depth-scoring would be the name of the game early in the first. Pressure, particularly by the Bobcat third line, awarded Quinnipiac a chance early in the first. A mishandle on a Princeton breakout would put the Bobcats right at the doorstep of Tiger’s junior goaltender Uma Corniea. Freshman left winger Ruby Rauk tipped a shot under the pad of Corniea to put the Bobcat squad up a goal, capping off a period in which the Bobcats outshot the Tigers nine to three. It seemed that Quinnipiac would maintain that pressure going into the second period. Another Bobcat goal, junior defender Brynne West’s first of her collegiate career, doubled the Bobcat lead. For the Bobcats, it seemed that momentum had finally swung their way. Going into the contest, the squad had not allowed more than two goals since their Oct. 17 matchup against the Northeastern Huskies. Quinnipiac also came into the contest having won each of the 12 games where it had scored at least a single goal. Then just 42 seconds later, the Princeton attack would begin. Three straight goals by the Tigers side would completely flip the script on the contest for Quinnipiac. Defensive breakdowns, particularly in transition for the Bobcats, would be the pitfall for the majority of the second and third periods. Stats remained nearly even across the board, with Princeton’s shots on goal matching Quinnipiac’s by the middle of the third. After a tight third, it seemed like Princeton’s three-goal outburst would be enough to put the Bobcats away without a point in conference standings. Momentum firmly swung in the Tigers favor, and the Quinnipiac offense had gone stale. In particular, the Bobcat’s first line made up of graduate student left winger Laurence Frenette, senior center Tessa Holk and star junior right winger Kahlen Lamarche had gone cold. This top line has scored 27 of Quinnipiac’s goals so far in the 2025-26 campaign, equating to half of the team’s total output. It seemed that the key to earning three points against Princeton was scoring from one of the three upperclassmen. Instead, it would be freshman winger Ella Johnson that would catapult the game into overtime. Receiving a stretch pass from deep in her own defensive zone, the Alaska native would beat Corniea glove side to tie the game at three. Despite Quinnipiac’s efforts in the final six minutes of regulation, including its second unsuccessful power play of the evening, the game would head to overtime. In the three-on-three, the odd-man rushes would kill Quinnipiac’s chance at escaping the Hobey Baker Memorial Rink with three points. An unsuccessful chance by Johnson on one end thanks to a sprawling save from Corniea was taken the other way by the Tigers. On the subsequent two-on-one, Princeton senior forward Issy Wunder would pass the puck from her knees to wide open sophomore forward Mackenzie Alexander, ending the sudden-death overtime period and giving the Bobcats their second loss of the season. Quinnipiac returns to home ice on Nov. 22 to take on the Princeton Tigers for the second time in three days. Puck drop is at 3 p. m.
