The president’s supportive wall of Republican legislators is crumbling! It was the conviction of four House Republican members who decided to break away from continuing to rubber-stamp the president’s directives and to side with the Democrats in pursuit of justice for women who were sexually abused as young children. The courage displayed by the four congressional leaders in support of the numerous victims of Jeffrey Epstein’s sexual exploitation of innocent 14-, 15-, and 16-year-old girls paved the way for the rest of the Republican legislators to join the Democrats and vote yes on a bill that would release the Epstein files in 30 days after presidential signing. Thus, it is the first positive sign of congressional oversight in preventing the president from doing whatever he wants, and whenever he wants to do it, regardless of whether his wishes may be illegal or legal according to the Constitution. Yes, it is refreshing to finally see and hear Republican legislators acting on behalf of their constituents. For the past few years, I thought the Democrats would be the only ones to control the radical behavior of this president. I now know it is really the responsibility of the Republican legislators. The question that remains is whether congressional Republicans are willing to continue to display a willingness to reject the prejudicial wishes of the president, or will their oversight behavior be a one-time phenomenon? Currently, the Democrats are requesting a three-year extension of the existing health-care benefits for recipients of Medicare, Medicaid and ACA programs. This will be a litmus test for Republican members to continue to exercise their oversight authority against the president’s wishes and mandates. However, after the House and Senate almost unanimously passed the bipartisan bill to open the Epstein files, I know it will ultimately be the Republicans who should and will be credited for keeping America a democracy. The jury is still out on whether the Republicans are sincere in their oversight role as a check and balance to the executive branch of government. But for now, I am ecstatic about their epiphany. I would be just as enthusiastic if they displayed the same attitude for the Department of Justice to act independently and not as the president’s legal adviser. Our country is severely politically divided. Re-establishing the checks and balances of the three branches of government could be the beginning of uniting all Americans to practice one nation, undivided, with liberty and justice for all.
