Arsenal legend Ray Parlour has questioned FIFA’s decision to let Cristiano Ronaldo play in the FIFA World Cup opener next summer. He believes that they are making a mistake, adding that they will need to scrap all the suspensions from the qualifiers. Ad Speaking on talkSPORT, Parlour said that the probation based on Ronaldo’s past record with the national team should not be considered. He added that they should not be bending the rules for one player, regardless of the player’s value, and said: Thanks for the submission! “I love Cristiano. I think he’s been absolutely brilliant for the game. You know, the way he’s conducted himself, but he can’t play in that first game. That’s it. He’s suspended. You know, you elbow someone in the face. How does he get out of that? There’s other players who are not going to play.” Ad Trending “Look, I know it’s his last World Cup and he’s such a big figurehead all around the world, but the rules are the rules. You can’t change it for one person and not the other. It’s probation for what, another year, another year, yes, yeah, but he might retire by then. Let’s just scrap everybody’s then, well, exactly, and then that we wouldn’t be arguing about it, would we? If they [do it for him], they [should] do the same [for others]!” Ad Cristiano Ronaldo was suspended for three matches after he elbowed Dara O’Shea during the 2-0 loss to Ireland. FIFA have reduced his suspension to one game, which he has already served after sitting out of the 9-1 FIFA World Cup qualifier win over Armenia. Pundit hits out at FIFA for Cristiano Ronaldo decision Former Chelsea star Craig Burley also slammed FIFA for their decision to suspend the two remaining matches from Cristiano Ronaldo’s ban. He claimed that the FIFA president was doing all he could within his power to ensure the Portugal star is at the tournament next summer and said on ESPN FC: Ad “If Gianni Infantino had any shame. because let’s be honest, he’d sell his soul for money, he’s shown that with the Club World Cup and the extended World Cup. They have made a mockery of their own disciplinary process, a complete sham. What this says to refs and other professionals is, ‘Maybe you shouldn’t send off the big stars, keep itto the guys under the radar because we want these big stars at a major tournament’.” Cristiano Ronaldo will create history at the FIFA World Cup, becoming the first player to feature at six editions. Lionel Messi will also be achieving the feat at the tournament next summer. × Feedback Why did you not like this content?
