Parkite speed skiing legend Lindsey Vonn kept her dream season rolling over the weekend at the Tarvisio, Italy, World Cup. The 41-year-old podiumed Tarvisio’s downhill and super-G races on Saturday and Sunday, finishing in third and second place, respectively.
Italy’s Nicol Delago bested Vonn and the field on Saturday in Tarvisio for her first World Cup race win. Germany’s Kira Weidle-Winkelmann finished 0.20 seconds behind the Italian in second place. Vonn did her best skiing on Saturday in the fourth and fifth (final) sectors of the Tarvisio course, comfortably making the podium by 0.16 seconds over Nina Ortlieb of Austria, who finished in fourth place.
On Sunday in the super-G race, Germany’s Emma Aicher walked away with the win. Aicher cleared Vonn’s finish time by 0.27 seconds, despite Vonn posting a few quick sector times. Vonn finished the four-sector super-G course on Sunday in 1:14.31, 0.67 seconds quicker than the Czech Republic’s Ester Ledecka in third place.
Vonn and the field battled foggy conditions on both race days, with visibility worse on Sunday for the super-G.
“It was good,” Vonn said about her result on Saturday in the downhill race. “I was pretty close to the fence but carried my speed OK for the conditions.”
Vonn was proud to have skied a finish time so close to the win on Saturday. “I am really close to first,” she added. “Considering everything, I have to be happy today.”
Vonn continues to feel more ready for the Olympics in Cortina with every race under her belt. Despite not defending her past two super-G World Cup wins at the venue, she gained valuable experience in dicey weather conditions.
“I skied really fast,” Vonn said. “Maybe the gliding was not as fast, but I am really happy to perform well in different snow and (on different) courses, which gives me confidence for Cortina.”
With her two results over the weekend in Tarvisio, Vonn has now podiumed every World Cup race this season, except for the St. Moritz, Switzerland season-opening super-G. She is the top-ranked downhill skier in the world and the second-ranked super-G skier.
“I was a little disappointed in my bottom, but in general very happy with my skiing,” Vonn said after her super-G race on Sunday. “I am close to the red bib (world leader in each alpine skiing discipline entering a race), so always a good day when that happens.”
Vonn will likely be chasing both Crystal Globes after the Olympics, given to the year-end top finisher in each FIS discipline. She last won a downhill globe in 2016 and a super-G one in 2015. Vonn has 13 total globes to her name, winning six straight downhill titles from 2008–2013.
“If I can fight for the globe in super-G that would be amazing,” Vonn said. “So, today (Sunday) was a good step in the right direction.”
The women’s World Cup speed skiing season continues in Crans Montana, Switzerland, next week after taking this week off. Vonn and the field will be racing a downhill and super-G in Crans Montana. This World Cup event will be the final women’s speed skiing competition before the Olympics next month.
