15 Democrats compete for Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky’s seat, open for first time in 26 years

CHICAGO — Longtime Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky is retiring, opening up Illinois’ 9th Congressional District race for the first time in 26 years. The district covers northern parts of Chicago and stretches into the northwest suburbs.

The Democratic primary competition has quickly become one of the most competitive races Illinois has seen in quite some time. With 15 candidates on the ballot vying to replace Schakowsky, the race is attracting considerable attention.

One of the front-runners is Evanston Mayor Daniel Biss, a former Illinois state senator who has the endorsement of Schakowsky. ABC7 was at his election night headquarters at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday to cover the developments.

Among other candidates who have raised significant funds—enough to purchase television ads—is former journalist Kat Abughazaleh, who is expected to perform well. Other notable contenders include current Illinois state Senator Laura Fine and gun control advocate Phil Andrew.

With so many candidates in the race, the outcome remains wide open. It promises to be a fascinating race to follow throughout the night.
