Spivey: Eagles look to start 4-0 with Hurts being the catalyst

Eagles can start 4-0 for the third time in the past four seasons (2022-23). Since 2015, the reigning Super Bowl champion has begun the following season with four consecutive wins five times. These impeccable starts to a season have been led by the one constant at QB. That’s Jalen Hurts.

Yet, week after week or year after year, people refuse to acknowledge his accomplishments. I’m not going to sit here and let people forget that Hurts was at the wheel last winter — that he did not orchestrate the most points any team has scored during an entire NFL postseason.

It’s almost as if the praise of an All-Pro, a two-time conference Super Bowl participant, world champion, and Super Bowl Most Valuable Player is sacrilegious. I know, having written about it before, that football has little to do with it.

Hurts is that aspiring actor who doesn’t look the part but wows everyone on the set. He nails every audition and makes who you had in mind for the role appear as an amateur. He has done everything the right way — leadership, eagerness to learn, always even-tempered, and possesses the ultimate quality: the relentless desire to win.

“I think playing a quarterback position everybody wants to have this since the security and what we’re doing,” Hurts mentioned during his weekly press conference.

Even when things don’t look good aesthetically or in rare defeat (undefeated in the last 17 games started and finished), Hurts has earned the benefit of the doubt whether we like it or not.

“Jalen’s always seen the field really well. Obviously, he gets better and better and better as reps that he takes throughout his career,” head coach Nick Sirianni said this week.

“We’ve always valued what he sees out there. That’s a really good asset to have, as a coaching staff, because again, all these things that he does so well that helps us win football games, you know, that’s just another one.”

The Eagles are 19-1 in their last 20 games, a first in franchise history. The one loss was last season at Washington, where Hurts exited the game with a concussion and the lead. We could very well be talking about a 20-game (including the playoffs) winning streak.

“It’s very essential going out there and processing things and really rooting yourself and the foundation of what you do,” said Hurts, who had a great second-half performance en route to their victory over the L.A. Rams last Sunday.

“Hope isn’t a game plan, and worrying and fear isn’t a game plan either, and so going out there and truly feeling confident in having an answer versus anything that they do is always what you’re striving for.”

According to CBS Sports, Hurts’ numbers during the 17-game winning streak are quite remarkable: 3,904 total yards, 43 touchdowns, and just five turnovers. Hurts has also completed over 70% of his passes and has a passer rating of 110.9 in this stretch, throwing just two interceptions in his last 316 passing attempts.

“The way he can communicate and talk to us of what he’s seeing, and again, that’s what you need,” added Sirianni. “That’s what you want out of your quarterback. I’m glad we have a quarterback, like Jalen Hurts, that does that and consistently does that.”

The Eagles will be in the heat and humidity of Central Florida as they take on the also 3-0 Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Hurts, Sirianni, and company will need to overcome the house of horrors in Tampa. They are 1-4 versus the Bucs in their last five matchups.

However, Philadelphia didn’t have their squad at full strength for most of those contests. Both teams are banged up with injuries, but nonetheless, expect another tight one.
