A North Attleboro man was sentenced to life in prison on Monday for fatally shooting and killing a Boston father of two, prosecutors said. Widmaer Lapaix, 29, was sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole after 15 years for killing Maceo Martin, 41, in a 2024 dispute, the office of Suffolk County District Attorney Kevin Hayden said in a press release. Lapaix was convicted of second-degree murder on April 3 following a nine day trial, court documents show. Around 1 a. m. on Oct. 8, 2024, Martin was outside of the Cambridge apartment building where his ex-wife lived with their children, yelling insults at her and ringing the doorbell. At the time, the ex-wife was inside the apartment with their children and Lapaix, prosecutors said. As the ex-wife tried to persuade Martin to leave, Lapaix took a rifle and fired one bullet through the entryway window and into Martin’s chest, Hayden’s office said. Martin was rushed to Boston Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead, prosecutors said. At the Monday sentencing, one of Martin’s sisters told the court “to know Maceo, was to know his infectious laugh,” the DA said. Lapaix spoke to the court and apologized to Martin’s family and his own, Hayden’s office said. “There were other ways this situation could and should have been handled, but those other ways were left unexplored. One life was ended and another dramatically altered as a result,” Hayden said. Attorneys for Lapaix did not respond to a request for comment Tuesday night.
