Relive some of the biggest happenings from the past week in Northeast Ohio prep sports.

Sunday

The Akron Ellet softball team defeated Akron Firestone 10-6 in the City Series championship game on Sunday. Amanda Donaldson tallied two hits, two runs scored and an RBI to help the Orangemen win the league playoffs for the 12th straight season.

Mentor High School junior quarterback Mitch Trubisky orally committed to accepting a football scholarship from the University of North Carolina on May 20. In agreeing to join the Tar Heels’ football program beginning in the 2013-14 school year, Trubisky declined scholarship offers from several other elite Division I programs, including Ohio State, Michigan State, Alabama and Tennessee.

Medina senior Brad Palocko recently signed a national letter of intent to attend Heidelberg University next school year and compete on the school’s Division III cross country and track and field squads.

Monday

The Akron Ellet baseball defeated Akron Firestone 7-6 in the City Series championship game on Monday. The victorious Orangemen scored four runs in the second inning.

Cleveland Heights senior standout basketball player Tyree Gaiter recently announced he will continue his academic and athletic career at Notre Dame College next school year.

Tuesday

The Cuyahoga Heights baseball team defeated Padua 2-1 in a nonleague regular season contest on the road Tuesday. Headlined by an Austin Lane double, the victorious Redskins scored their lone runs in the top of the seventh inning.

The Lincoln West and James Ford Rhodes baseball teams advanced to the Senate Athletic League title game on June 5th at Progressive Field with playoff wins on Tuesday night. Behind a complete game, seven-strikeout performance by Manny Garcia, the Wolverines defeated John Marshall 10-3. Behind a complete game, 12-strikeout performance and a 3-for-3 day at the plate by Niko Merced, the Rams collected an 11-1 win against John F. Kennedy.

The Poland Seminary softball team outslugged Warren Champion 10-9 in a regular season contest on Tuesday. Arlia Duarter scored the decisive run on a solo home run in the sixth inning.

Wednesday

The Brecksville-Broadview Heights softball team defeated Willoughby South 6-1 in a Division I regional tournament semifinal on Wednesday. The victorious Bees’ four-run first inning was headlined by an inside-the-park home run by Alexis Mack.

Led by sophomore pitcher Kate Boylan’s performance in the pitching circle and at the plate, the Archbishop Hoban softball team defeated Lake Catholic 2-1 in a Division II Akron regional semifinal on Wednesday. Outfielder Emma Horning preserved the victory for the Knights by throwing out Lake Catholic’s Katie Pucella at the plate to end the game.

The Black River softball team defeated Canton Central Catholic 11-6 in a Division III Massillon regional tournament semifinal on Wednesday. The victorious Pirates scored six runs in the second inning and five runs in the fourth inning.

The Toledo Notre Dame Academy softball team ended North Royalton’s season with a 6-4, 10-inning win in a Division I Clyde regional semifinal on Wednesday. The victorious Eagles scored two runs each in the sixth, seventh and 10th innings to record the come-from-behind win and to earn the right to advance.

The Keystone softball team scored four runs in the fourth inning and tacked on three more runs later in the game to remain unbeaten and defeat Clear Fork 7-5 in come-from-behind fashion on Wednesday in a Division II Bucyrus regional tournament semifinal.

Behind the pitching of Tara Thacker and the hitting of Jenna Lilley, the North Canton Hoover softball team defeated Boardman 5-0 on Wednesday to clinch the outright Federal League championship. Thacker threw a no-hitter and Lilley recorded three hits and drove in all of the team’s runs.

Thursday

The Chardon baseball team rallied to defeat Mayfield 12-10 in a Division I Canton regional tournament semifinal contest on Thursday. Ben Furlich, Reilly Hawkins and Brady Lawrence drove in runs in the Hilltoppers’ seven-run fifth inning.

The Lake Catholic baseball team defeated Tallmadge 5-4 in a Division II Hudson regional tournament semifinal contest on Thursday. Trevor Boslett capped the Blue Devils’ come-from-behind effort with a walkoff single.

The Our Lady of the Elms softball team defeated Crestline 2-1 on Thursday in a Division IV Kent regional tournament semifinal without recording a hit. The victorious Panthers scored the decisive run on a throwing error.

Caly Russo limited Grove City to just three hits as the North Canton Hoover softball team defeated the Greyhounds 3-1 in a Division I Buckeye regional tournament semifinal on Thursday.

Friday

The Lake Catholic baseball team won a regional championship in dramatic fashion on Friday. The Cougars defeated the Canfield Cardinals 4-3 in the Division II Hudson regional tournament final on a two-out, two-run home run by Zach Hawkins in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Alex Zander limited Seneca East to just two hits while striking out seven batters to help Cuyahoga Heights defeat the Tigers 9-0 on Friday and win the Division IV Lorain regional tournament championship.

The Massillon Perry baseball team defeated Chardon 5-2 in the Division I Canton regional tournament championship game on Friday. Gary Lawrence struck out 14 batters for the victorious Panthers. Perry scored four runs in the third inning.

The Westlake baseball team scored six runs in the top of the seventh inning to rally to defeat Ashland 10-7 in the Division I Cleveland regional tournament final on Friday.

Saturday

The Medina softball team defeated Brecksville-Broadview Heights 5-4 on Saturday to win the Division I Akron regional tournament championship. Madison Tata singled with two outs in the top of the ninth inning to drive in the decisive run for the victorious Bees.

The Elyria softball team routed Notre Dame Academy 18-2 in the Division I Clyde regional tournament championship game on Saturday.

The Keystone softball team pounded out 16 hits en route to defeating Lima Shawnee 11-1 in the Division II Bucyrus regional championship game on Saturday.

Westlake senior Colton Buffington defeated Zach Mueck to win the Ohio High School Athletic Association Division I singles tennis title on Saturday.
