Russian Missiles and Drones Kill Four Across Ukraine Overnight
Overnight Friday, Russian missile and drone strikes killed four people across Ukraine, targeting the capital Kyiv and the Dnipropetrovsk region. The attacks come amid President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s urgent calls for increased Western air defense support.
In Kyiv, a ballistic missile struck in the early hours of Saturday, killing two people and injuring 13 others, according to police reports. The missile impact ignited a fire in a non-residential building, while debris shattered windows in nearby structures. During the assault, Mayor Vitali Klitschko posted on Telegram: “Explosions in the capital. The city is under ballistic attack.”
The Dnipropetrovsk region also suffered casualties, with two deaths and seven injuries reported. Apartment buildings and private homes sustained damage, said acting regional Governor Vladyslav Haivanenko.
Ukraine’s Air Force reported that Russia launched nine missiles and 62 drones during the attacks. Ukrainian defense forces successfully intercepted four missiles and 50 drones. Russia, however, claimed its air defenses shot down 121 Ukrainian drones overnight.
President Zelenskyy emphasized that these attacks highlight the critical need for advanced air defense systems. On the social media platform X (formerly Twitter), he stated, “It is precisely because of such attacks that we pay special attention to Patriot systems to be able to protect our cities from this horror.”
Zelenskyy is seeking to purchase 25 Patriot missile defense systems from the United States to bolster urban air defenses. Additionally, he appealed to Washington to expand sanctions on Russian oil and provide long-range missiles to Ukraine.
These appeals were made during talks in London with European leaders, who pledged ongoing military support. The meeting, hosted by British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, concentrated on protecting Ukraine’s power grid and bolstering air defenses ahead of the approaching winter.
Meanwhile, Russian envoy Kirill Dmitriev suggested that Russia, the U.S., and Ukraine are “quite close to a diplomatic solution” to end the three-year conflict.
